血液腫瘍グループの診療は吉田、井口、更科、鳥海の4名によるグループで行っており、患者さんの力になれるようにと日々頑張っています。年間の新患入院数は25名前後、のべ入院数は170名くらいで病棟には常に15-20名の患者さんが入院されています。JACLS（小児白血病研究会）、JPLSG（日本小児白血病リンパ腫研究グループ）両治療研究グループに属し、常に最先端の治療を受けて頂けるよう考えています。
固形腫瘍の治療は小児外科の宮本、平澤両医師と密な関係を保ちスムーズな医療に努めています。難治性疾患に対してはこれまで約80例の造血幹細胞移植を行ってきました。当科は北海道で札幌を除いて唯一の小児移植センターです。4床の無菌室を持つ独立した無菌病棟を小児科内に持ち安全で快適な療養に努めています。
当科には東川養護学校による訪問学級が設置されており専用の教室もありますが、訪問教育の特長を生かしたベッドサイドでの個別指導も行われています。
また、臨床治療研究の他、造血幹細胞の生体外増幅、造血幹細胞と成長ホルモンの関係、移植後GVHD、VODの診断･制御、鉄欠乏と神経疾患の関連などに関する研究も行っています。
